Abstract

Based on her fieldwork in the Balearle islands, the author argues that the couvade has existed in them until recently, mainly as a jural rite by which a man is socially recognized as the father of a newborn. The social function of the custom reinforces the mythical and ritual aspects that bestow upon certain natural elements the capacity of constituting the personality of a human-being.
