Abstract

Our objective is to build bridges between Amerindian perspectivism, recently studied in great detail by anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, and philosophical perspectivism, which we will identify with the help of a plausible profile related to the perspectivist philosophical tradition itself. In both cases, the problem of a relativism that embraces the egalitarian thesis that, fundamentally, all perspectives have the same value is insistently raised. We argue that, despite the undeniable connections to relativism, in both cases perspectivism has the resources to consider that relativism is not an inevitable consequence of perspectivism. The meliorist attitude, which consists in trusting that there can always be better perspectives and the willingness to seek them in processes of interaction and crossing of perspectives, is the crucial factor for differentiating perspectivism from relativism. That perspectivism can maintain its identity in front of relativism an important outcome for both anthropology and philosophy.
