Abstract

Hagiographical literature in Western Islam is abundant from the 12th-13th centuries onward, and is tied to the introduction and expansión of sufism in al-Andalus and Morocco. In this paper I analyse three hagiographical texts from al-Andalus in order to understand how the authority of a holy man is constructed from two perspectives: fear of his miraculous power and love inspired in his followers. Through these two passions, love and fear, one can infer the existence of a political and religious pattern for authoritarian relationships in Western Islam.
