Between speech and silence: the transformation of gender roles in spaces of religious-secular activism

ABSTRACT
This article addresses the narratives of transformation portrayed by religious leaders who participate in sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) prevention workshops in different African settings carried out by an NGO based in South Africa. Our concern is to reveal the ways in which workshops’ participants ascribe meaning to the process of transforming gender roles and norms in religious and secular territories; and, in relation to that, to explore the tensions and conformities that emerge when both women and men analyse gender inequalities in their personal lives. The article shows how such participants articulate the notion of «transformation» in the field of gender violence, according to an emotional repertoire framed by expressions such as to speak, to listen and silence. This process has at least two dimensions: on the one hand, it helps to articulate narratives around the challenges they face when dealing with SGBV in their personal lives from concrete spaces such as the church, the family; or in affective relationships and the community environment. On the other, helping to frame the existing tensions between new perspectives on gender roles and relations that unfold in secular and religious territories.
