On Personnes Morales and House Societies

Taking as a starting point the controversy surrounding the English translation of the definition of Lévi-Strauss’s sociétés à maison, I propose a revision of the problematic concept of the ‘corporate body’ (personne morale). This essay seeks to show how it was interpreted by certain structuralist authors, analysing some of Durkheim’s work with a view to contributing to the revaluation of the consolidated thesis that has Mauss as the father of the notion. In that sense, it can be observed that the conception of personne morale mobilizes an epistemic logic that assumes the incorporality of an ideal level into a material one. This has consequences that were possibly ignored in contemporary uses of the Levi-Straussian conception of the ‘house’.
