While anthropology and tourism have not always enjoyed a happy relation, the anthropology of tourism has come of age, and this in different academic traditions. Having been around for half a century, this subfield of anthropology played a substantial role in the establishment of tourism studies. I trace this history here by analysing the influential role of the Hosts and Guests edited volumes in shaping the relationship between anthropology and tourism. I zoom in on how some novel ideas were not picked up while others started leading their own lives. This exercise helps us to better understand the current position of the anthropology of tourism within anthropology and tourism studies and to identify future directions. This includes a recognition that there is no single canon but, instead, multiple anthropologies of tourism. Anthropology as a discipline has important contributions to make to the study of tourism. It offers a holistic approach to the critical analysis of tourism through its comparative framework and the ability to bring various scales together, by recognizing the cross-cultural interconnectedness of economic, environmental and social domains. The question that begs an answer is how anthropologists should deal with the discipline’s implication in contemporary tourism around the globe.
