The anonymous French medieval prose romance Histoire de Valentin et Orson, the Spanish play Ursón y Valentin, hijos del Rey de Francia, Lope de Vega's baroque drama, and the ballads «Don Claudia y Doña Margarita», have a common folk source: the folkta!e «John the bear» (tale-type AT 3016). A comparative anaJysis is made of literary and oral versions.
