Memoria y cambio en los relatos épicos africanos

The aim of this article is double. First I want to introduce to the reader the so-called «Major Genders» in African oral literature; these can be classified as «Installation Epic Poems», «Heroic Epic Poems» and «Clan-related Epic Poems.» Second, I discuss a critique of the compilation and edition methodology used up to the present, which comes down to us wrapped in an aura of «authenticity» that corresponds with neither the reality of the compiled texts nor the vitality currently displayed by African oral literature. What really matters is not so much the creation and transmission of the narratives as the authority granted by African societies and western academic circles to a clique of specialists who performs a paralyzing function on these genders. Fortunately, there are in the field other, less heeded, politically-independent specialists who encourage the creativity and vitality of the «Major Genders» by paying attention to other features.
