Abstract

A general overview is given of the relations between anthropology and archaeology, that historically come from the very beginning of hoth disciplines but only recently have brought about a new branch of knowledge - ethnoarchaeology as the scíence of behaviour and material culture. Examining in tum each of the maín problem areas - archaeologicaÍ deposit formation, technology and subsistence, settlement and social organisation, art and ritual- a brief demonstration is intended of how ethnographic parallels from non-literate societies of today and the recent past can be used to flesh out the bones of the prehistoric record. Though the article puts a greater emphasis on crosscultural laws, reference is also made to the current controversy between the processual-scientifist and the contextual-hermeneutic approaches.
