Sorne Spanish Catholic cult~ to «Virgins of March» associated with cattle references are related to the folk tale The shepherd and March known in ali the Mediterranean area. The study of its sources goes back to ancient agricultura} and pastoral myth~ and rites related to the Roman god Mars and to the Basque goddes Mari, links of a mythical archetype even more archaic, probably of Indoeuropean origins.
