Abstract

1492 was also the year of the conquest of Granada. The victorious Catholic Kings made provision for the perpetua! conmemoration of this military event, charged with very spedal symbolic significan ce. Here I shall proceed to trace the formal evolution of such celebrations in Granada itself as well as the festive repercussions of the event in other areas. A model of the «conmemorative universe» will be put forward which will comprise the historical event, its institucionalized memory and its ritual repercussions. From the in-depth study of a specific case of a conmemorative process I wish to draw attention to some anthropological considerations concerning conmemorative mechanisms in general.
