All though coats of arms are interesting indicators of human behaviours, they are seldom considered under this perspective. From a function of simple differentiation, of identity sign, they often become exponents of the lineage traditions. This paper analyses the causes and circumstances of these changes in Spain, paying special attention to the forms of evolution of the perception of the past.
