What Do Experts Mean When They Speak about Culture?

In this article we explore how culture-based differences are produced and treated by professionals responsible for expert evaluation processes in which specific (sexual or family) competencies or skills are assessed in different subject categories (such as immigrant persons in HIV epidemiology or families constituted by international adoption). By comparing these two areas of intervention, albeit a priori dissimilar, we pinpoint relevant likenesses that help understand the institutional logics implicit in interventions of this type. In particular, we are interested in the biopolitical derivations that support the deployment of these strategies of expert mediation and treatment of cultural difference.
