In their fight against unemployment, public authorities in France appear to have discovered in recent years that domestic chores, traditionally done by women, are economically fruitful. Thus, there has been a growth of jobs known as -home helps» or «services in the home» which all contribute to an externalization of this type of employment. Ninety-nine per cent of these jobs are held by women with no or few qualifications. Through an inquiry carried out among the management and workers of «home services» associations, the author shows how the «domestic logic» prevailing in this type of activity brings about. precariousness. She also shows how important «home Services» associations are in this situation.
