Abstract

One may ask, are feasts games? Both feasts and games have characteristics in common: both are playful, involve voluntary acts, require rituals and a specific time and space. However, feasts and games also differ. In games, rules are explicit; in feasts, they are implicit. Some games need a single player only, whereas feasts are all collective performances. In a game, the player strives to win, but, in a feast, the participant has something else in his or her mind. Although rituals of a feast may include games, a feast is always more than a game or a set of games; before all else, it is a celebration or a commemoration: of a saint, of an historical event, etc. Furthermore, a feast includes roles that reinforce group identity and cohesión; these roles are lacking in games.
