The author introduces a number of variables that remarkably bear on the relationship between photography and anthropology from 1839 to 1936. He also establishes a preliminary system of classification of anthropological photographs. Finally, he analyzes one of the first attempts made in Spain of the use of photography in ethnography: that of the Archivo de Etnografía y Folklore de Cataluña.
