This paper is intended to present a general overview of the main contributions to the anthropological study of migrations. The need is stressed to rely on statistics and to tum to sorne research made in the domains of sociology, human geography or economics in arder to attain the necessarily wide frame of reference to understand the migratory phenomenon. A special reference is also made to the current research and publications in Spain, where the situation has completely changed in the last fifteen years, from being a country of interna! and externa! migrntion to experiment a growing number of inmigrant arrivals.
