Abstract


In this paper the term Ethnobotany is defined and its origin as well as the evolution of its meaning discussed. A classification is provided of the plants according to their uses, together with comments on the origin and importance of the vemacular names. The main research lines within this field continue to be: (1) the origin of cultivated plants and the introduction of new crops; (2) the cultural importance of certain crops in the different a reas; and (3) the search of new chemical components from plants mainly for therapeutical uses. The variety in plant uses in Spain is oudined in accordance with the ethnological and floristic diversity. The methodology followed in collecting the field data is briefly mentioned. Finally, the different geographical areas surveyed are indicated with special emphasis on its ethnobotanical interest.
