The author analyzes the behavior of primary school, working-class children as they learn mathematics and French. Language is the operating principie in these disciplines, yet the culture of the working class relates with language in a wai that makes live oral communication important and, therey, hinders people's attainment of the metalinguistic an introspective capacities needed for this type of learning at school. It is proficiency in the written language and, first of all, in the logical structures of language what enables a person to comprehend abstract knowledge and logico-mathematical formalism.
