From cultural heritage to urban commons: «Paco Graco» and the second lives of commercial signs

«Paco Graco» is the name of an artistic initiative dedicated to the protection and recovery of Madrid’s commercial graphic heritage. My involvement with the project deepened over a period of approximately nine months when I was invited to direct the documentary film accompanying this manuscript. The initiative’s interventions are examined in these pages as a specific case of artistic appropriation of cultural heritage, particularly notable for its expansion from the notion of cultural heritage toward the identification and defense of commons-based heritage. Secondly, this experience also engages with the challenges of contemporary urban transformation processes, as it involves an intervention into the value of everyday, overlooked, and subaltern memories. Adopting a relational, embodied, and situated approach —using a digital cinema camera— these intertwined issues are explored through a triangulation of perspectives: those of the initiative’s participants, relevant bibliographic references, and the contextual, reflexive, and situated nature of my own perspective as an anthropologist and filmmaker.
